Faith Talking Circles

Once a month we gather people together for a Faith Talking Circle. Using the Indigenous practice of a talking circle, we gather in person to discuss the life, ministry, and words of Jesus. Our discussions will center around the question of what faith communities that love like Jesus look like today.

When weather permits we gather around a fire. If the weather is not favorable we will gather in a circle inside. We start with a prayer and reading of a passage from the life of Jesus. Using a talking piece, we take turns sharing our impressions from the readings. We will use a servant’s towel as our talking piece to pass around so that everyone has an opportunity to speak.

Basic Practices of a Talking Circle
  • The circle flattens the hierarchy and creates a place where all are honored.
  • Talking Piece is passed around the circle during the discussion time.
  • Only the person with the Talking Piece speaks.
  • All others have an opportunity to listen.
  • It is OK to pass when the Talking Piece comes to you. You will have other opportunities.
  • The Circle Keeper starts the process of going around the circle.
  • Speak from the heart.
  • Listen from the heart.
  • Practice confidentiality with personal information. What’s said in the circle stays in the circle.
